This is a process where metal cations form ionic bonds with negatively charged dirt, dust, and suspended solids in the water. Flocculation is when a polymer chain is added to create large floc particles of these coagulated particles, which then settle to the bottom of the tank. This removes dirt and debris from the water and forms sludge at the bottom of the tank that is removed. The cleaned water then moves on to disinfection and is then distributed through piping networks to provide society with clean water. I had a lot of fun researching this topic as it is very important to me as an Environmental Engineer. Providing society with clean, potable water is a basic human right and is something that wouldn't be possible without chemistry.
