Where would we be without plastic?
Man-made polymers are versatile, cheap, and downright ubiquitous. But like anything made using
fossil fuels, they may not always be as accessible as they are now. Let’s explore the place plastic
has in our lives, and explore how living without it would feel.

(This movie was made in 2011, but the issues it raises are still with us, and it’s such a good synopsis of the many issues
surrounding plastic that I think it’s worth watching.)

Here is your assignment:
CHEM 409.10N: Chemistry and Society
(Summer 2021)
Open notebook discussion 3: Salt
water and surface tension
Due Thursday, June 10, 2021 at 2:00 PM
>
• Part 1: To get a perspective on the role that plastics play in our society, watch the movie “Bag it.” Answering these questions may help you
take some useful notes for our discussion. (Answering the questions is optional–they are just potentially helpful as a way to take notes as
you watch.) Note: this movie is available free through the UNH subscription to Kanopy at this location. Click “watch now,” then “Find
your university.” You’ll be prompted to log in with your UNH credentials, then you’ll be able to see the movie.
• Part 2: Do the “Un-plastic Experiment.” (See below.) This experiment takes some planning and thought (and part of your discussion post
will be to describe that planning) so I encourage you to start thinking now about how you will accomplish it
• Part 3: Post your response to “Bag it” and the “Un-plastic Experiment” by Wednesday, June 9, 5:00pm. See the “Un-plastic
Experiment” description below for a more specific prompt for this post. If you want to make two separate posts (one on the movie, the
other on the “un-plastic” experiment) that’s fine, or your can combine your comments into one post.
• Part 4: Due Friday, June 11, 5:00pm. Comment on the posts of at least two classmates. Try to be specific in linking your comments to
your experience and observations of the world. Does this lead to a longer discussion? So much the better! Feel free to comment and
answer comments as you will…….that’s what we’re here for!

Week 3 reflection

The Un-plastic experiment:
Spend two hours of your life plastic-free. Don’t use plastic, don’t wear plastic, don’t sit on plastic, don’t
touch plastic, don’t eat food that has been encased in plastic.
Two consecutive hours, during which you are awake and you must eat one meal.
By “plastic” I mean any man-made organic polymer. (“Organic” refers to a molecule with a carbon skeleton. Other elements may
be attached to that skeleton.) Refer to Wikipedia or here for a discussion of what materials qualify as plastics. Notice that synthetic clothing
fibers (like nylon, polyester, spandex, etc.) would qualify as plastic here. Also realize that many common items (like computers and
phones), if not made of plastic, may be coated with plastic.
This is not an easy assignment. You’ll need to do some planning. Do research to determine what in your life is and isn’t plastic. Plan what you will
do for those two hours. Be creative and thorough in your attempt to avoid plastic. Please avoid cheating. Don’t, for example, appoint a friend to
open a bag of chips (or whatever else) for you. Instead, forego the chips and eat food that doesn’t come encased in plastic. The point of this
exercise is to experience everything that comes up as you try to spend these two short hours away from plastic.
If, as you complete this assignment, you “fail” in certain details (i.e., do come in contact with plastic), be sure to note these “failures.” Minimize
these “failures” as much as possible, but realize that noticing your own reaction to “failures” is part of your experience too.

these “failures” as much as possible, but realize that noticing your own reaction to “failures” is part of your experience too.
Part 3 of the discussion assignment is your actual discussion post: Write a post in the “All things plastic” discussion by Wednesday, June 9,
5:00pm. Your post should include:
• A description that gives us the flavor of your un-plastic experience. How did you manage to avoid plastic? How much did it change your
normal routine? Include anything in particular you noticed about your own reactions to the experience, any ways in which plastic was
particularly hard to avoid, anything surprising that came up, etc.
• Your impressions, following the “Bag it” movie and your un-plastic experiment of the role that plastic should or shouldn’t play in our lives.
Does our society have a problem with plastic, or are the concerns expressed in “Bag it” off base? Going forward, what will YOU be thinking
about when it comes to plastic use, and what will YOU be doing?
• Note: If you’d like to divide this into two separate posts, that’s fine.
Part 4: Comment on the post of at least two classmates by Friday, June 11, 5:00pm
Again, try to be specific in linking your comments to your experience and observations of the world. Does this lead to a longer discussion? So
much the better! Feel free to comment and answer comments as you will…..that’s what we’re here for.
