Project: Study of Reaction Condition Variations in the Elimination
Reaction of Cyclohexyl Halides
Elimination reactions are one of a few fundamental basic reactions in organic chemistry.
These reactions involve the loss of two substituents and the creation of a double bond.
There are two different types of elimination reaction mechanisms you are currently
familiar with – E1 and E2 – each with a specific set of conditions that favors it.
In this experiment, you will study several elimination reactions involving different
cyclohexyl halides, in turn analyzing gas chromatography data to understand reaction
kinetics. After inspecting the data obtained, you will develop chemical explanations to
rationalize the results that were obtained.

Instructions for Calculating Percent Conversion from Gas
Chromatograms
In order to evaluate the kinetics of the elimination reactions, you will calculate a value
called β€œpercent conversion”. Percent conversion refers to the amount of starting material
that is consumed during a reaction, regardless of what product(s) it forms. It is
calculated by comparing the amount of starting material at the end of a reaction to the
sum of the amounts of starting material and the product(s) made.
For example, in the gas chromatogram below, the starting material of the reaction has a
retention time of 5.8 minutes and the product has a retention time of 13.3 minutes:

The area under a peak in gas chromatograms correlates to the amount of a compound
