Proposal
Women in the early twenty first centuries were mainly not considered as Artists, when people
often talked about Art, they did not typically think about women but men. Racism and women
right played a huge role when it comes to African American female Artists. African American
woman have always had a permanent double bull’s eye on their back. Their skin and gender
were their worst enemy. In the 1700 century women rights movements started to rise. But if you
look up women right movements starting in the 1700 century, the face of women rights is
predominantly white women. Between books and the internet, they show that it was mostly white
women who helped woman rights. “Throughout the History of western Art too there has been a
tendency to exoticize the woman artist as an exception, and then paradoxically to use her unique
status as a weapon to undermine her achievement.” (Pg70). However, women faced all a lot of
discrimination and challenges since they have been involved in the making of Art, their wok
compared to male’s has often been overlooked and undervalued. How did Edmonia Lewis
became the first to get an international recognition for her work as a Black African American
Sculptor?
In this paper we will focus on Edmonia’s life background in the United States and Italy, her
career as a black Sculptor and the Analysis on some of her beautiful work because She did not let

no type of criticism that was told to women at the time stop her and her ideas and hard work. In
her earlier years every day, she would embrace a new idea and stayed focus. “She was
determinate to achieve legitimacy as a sculptor on her own terms.” (Chadwick 74)
