1. Copy & Paste the data from the Excel
column with the Column Letter that is the

WHY TABULATE\GRAPH DATA?
● Simplify information
● Read “unreadable” large data sets
● Look for patterns
● Order and organize information
● Comparison purposes
● Improve ability to find relevant information
in a timely manner
● Create new discussions\ideas
ELEMENTS OF A GOOD GRAPH/CHART
● Choose the right type of chart
● Use an informative title
● Label each axis if doing so adds clarity
● Use a Legend\Key if it adds clarity
● Add design elements wisely
● Keep the graph clean: don’t overload the
graph with too many tick marks, too much
color, too many font styles
While very good, Excel’s tabulating and charting tools at times need to be improved upon. When
graphing you can click anywhere within a chart or click on Add Chart Element on the ribbon bar to
change elements within the chart.
Remember, we use tables and graphs to make our case and/or tell our story, and so along those lines
tables and graphs should be specifically identified/titled, clear, and easily understandable.
Most Important: a graph or table should be “readable” without the reader having to search back to
the original data!
Keep the above in mind whenever (at least this semester!) working with an Excel table or graph.
