University of Wisconsin Whitewater Basic Chemistry Electrolytes Presentation
Purpose: This is a group or individual project and it will have you look closely at how compounds behave in solution. You will be completing drawings based on the information that you learned in Chapter 6 and including information about the dissociation reaction for the electrolytes.
Tasks:
Step 1. Watch the following video of the demonstration.
This is a demonstration that I frequently do in class (however this is not me).
If you would like a further demonstration of this topic you can access a
simulation (Links to an external site.)
that will allow you to see the macro and submicroscopic view of electrolytes. Play around with the tabs at the top and the options that you are given.
Step 2. As a group or individually present the following information.
Look at the following substances being tested.
- Solid NaCl
- NaCl solution
- Ethanol (CH3CH2OH)
- Ethanol with NaCl
- Sugar solution(C12H22O11)
- CuSO4 solution
- Distilled water
- Tap Water (Contains lots of ions but you can think of it mainly as CaCl2.)
- Predict what the result would be for Gatorade (you may have to look up the ingredients of Gatorade)
For each include the following information in your presentation.
- Summarize the results of the demonstration. For Gatorade predict what the demonstration would show.
- Classify the compound as electrolyte or nonelectrolyte and explain why.
- If it is an electrolyte write the dissociation reaction.
- Draw or make a model of the compounds. Make sure to think about them on the submicroscopic scale. If they are dissolved in water (solution), think about how they interact with the water molecules. (You may wonder why I have you make models. Models or drawings show me if you understand the concepts on the molecular level.)
Present the information. There are lots of ways that you could do this, please choose a method that would appeal best to you or your group. This is not an exhaustive list so if you think of another way, just ask. What ever method that you choose be sure to document who is participating in the work and how. This could be a name on the slide or a summary slide at the end.
