Nelms, Amber. “The Yellow Wallpaper: A Discussion of Mental Healthcare, Feminism, and
Gender Roles Under the Guise of the Supernatural.” (2016).
In her, “A Discussion of Mental Healthcare, Feminism, and Gender Roles Under the Guise
of the supernatural,” Nelms discusses gender roles as presented in “The Yellow Wallpaper.”
According to the author, the text presents feminist ideals in texts at first glance. The theme of
Gilman, the author, was to make it be read as a feminist piece. Gilma gives examples that focus
on women’s mental health care in the late 1800s, and all that the author presents is on the
traditional gender roles that appear to the relationship of the narrator (Gilma) with her husband.
The story was made to scare people on the sexist culture in most societies. Underneath the entire
story, there is a lot of feminist dialogue. John, the husband to the narrator and his symbolic role
as the patriarchy, the women in the wallpaper representing all the women, and the roles of
women in the Victorian society are the primary feminist issues. The article is very crucial in the
study as it directly addresses the research topic. It presents the feminist roles in Victorian society
as depicted in “The Yellow Wallpaper” and other issues affecting women in the patriarchal
society like mental health. Therefore, the article will provide key information on feminism and
gender roles in the
story.
Núñez-Puente, Carolina. “A queer eye for Gilman’s text: The yellow wallpaper, a film by PBS.”
Atlantis. Journal of the Spanish Association for Anglo-American Studies (2019): 11-29.
The author successfully explains the queen interpretation of “The Yellow Wallpaper” as
presented in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story. The article is divided into three parts. The first
part focuses on queerness and feminism as presented in Gilman’s text. The second part analysis
the feminist aspects as portrayed in the queer film. The last part of the article responds to Janet
Beer PBS’s production that ignores the queer character of the movie. The section discusses the
topic’s queer treatment: women’s solidarity, lesbian tendencies, identity instability, and gender
and class inequalities. The article also brings in the aspect of dialoguing with Laura Mulvey and
Linda Hutcheon film critics. The article would mainly be useful in analyzing the roles of gender
and feminism in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” The article presents a good analysis of the
female characters in the story and their role in the story. Similarly, the article will help in the
easy identification of the male characters in the story, thus providing a clear and easy-to-
understand research paper.
Salayo, Juland, and April Macam. “From Fancy to Feminist Frenzy Fight: An Ideational
Grammatical Metaphor of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’.” Journal of
Foreign Language Teaching and Translation Studies 5.2 (2020): 41-66.
The article explores the relationship between the author’s personal experiences and the
story. Specifically, the aim of the article is to understand Gilman’s linguistic choices that
highlight the discrimination factors that make the women’s state in society worse and struggles
as represented by the male-dominated society. As shown in the story, the feminine gender roles
were poorly positioned; they were ignored and abused. Based on the explanation, the study aims
at explaining the author’s present experiences and what is within her. It provides an environment
that explains how such a community system like the Victoria society described in the story
influences the experiences of the author. The article is relevant to the research topic as it shows
various choices used by the author. Such information is important in answering the question of
feminism and gender roles in the story. Again, in analyzing the choices employed by the author,
the article exposes some of feminism and gender roles not explained in other articles. As such,
the article will serve to provide extra detailed information on feminism and gender roles in the
story.
Turner, Emma. ““The Yellow Wallpaper”: Coloring the Borders of First-Wave Feminism.” ΑΚΦ
(2018): 56.
In this article, the author, Turner, reviews the story of “The Yellow Wallpaper.” According
to the author, among the 19th century canonical authors, none has ever directly influenced first-
wave feminism ideas execution like Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The story presents the transition
of women from domestic lifestyles to workforce styles. According to the author, the story
primarily focuses on the author’s experiences in a patriarchal society and the impact the societal
system had on her life. In other words, the author uses the article for an explanation of “The
Yellow Wallpaper” and how the author’s life experiences, as a female, triggered her to write the
book. The article is quite directive on first-wave feminism, as explained in the story. It provides
a clear picture of the patriarchal society and how the societal system affected the roles played by
women. Therefore, the article will play a central role in understanding and explaining the roles of
the female gender in the story. Again, the source will help give out the general review of the
