Directions: All parts must be typed or presented electronically in a single file, handwritten parts or parts
submitted as a second document will not be graded. Scanned handwritten parts will not be accepted as
presented electronically. You will be permitted to turn in multiple rough drafts for points toward the final
assignment. In order to earn credit for the rough draft(s), you must address the feedback provided by
your professor.
Part 1: Study Option and Introduction

(Rough Draft 1 Due __2/9/21__)
Study Options: You must pick one of the following questions to study throughout the semester.
1. How many hours do you work in a week?

2. How many ounces of plain water do you drink in a day?
Introduction: Write an introduction stating/identifying the following…
1. Discuss the topic that you are using (from the list above) throughout the semester. Identify
who your intended population will be. (Ask your professor for suggestions, if needed.)
2. Describe the process in which you are going to collect your data. Include in the description a
discussion of the data collection (survey, observational, simulation, etc.) and sampling
method(s) you used (random, convenience, cluster, etc.).
3. Research your topic and intended population. You are looking for a study about your topic
that will include a population mean. You must match your intended population. Submit the
web address to Canvas in the designated place. Look in the Signature Assignment module in
Canvas.
4. Revisit this section in part 4, Hypothesis Testing.
Part 2: Data Collection and Analysis (Rough Draft 2 Due __2/23/21__)
Data Collection: Collect at least 40 data values, but no more than 50. (Enter the data into a
single column without units in an excel file and submit the file to Canvas in the designated place.)
Look in the Signature Assignment module in Canvas.
Stem-and-Leaf Plot: You must include a comprehensive list of your data organized in a stemand-leaf plot. You must include a title and key with your plot. Discuss the shape of the data using
the plot.
Box-and-Whisker Plot: You must include a box-and-whisker plot using the following website,
http://www.imathas.com/stattools/. You must include a title and units in your plot. The number
line must also encompass the whole plot. Discuss the shape of the data using the plot.
Statistical Analysis: Using the data that you have collected, determine the mean, standard
deviation, and median. Round your values to one decimal place. Discuss the shape of the data
using the mean and median relationship.
Part 3: Outliers (Rough Draft 3 Due __3/30/21___)
Outlier Calculation: Use the mean and the standard deviation to determine any outliers within
your data set. Include the calculation and the values in your data that are considered outliers from
this calculation, if any. If there are no outliers, state such.
Outlier Discussion: You must complete the option that matches your answer in part 2, statistical
analysis.
Option 1: Data with Outliers If your data contains outliers re-evaluate and re-create the
stem-and-leaf plot, box-and-whisker plot, and the statistical analysis (mean, standard
deviation, median) without the values that have been deemed outliers. Round the values to
one decimal place. Discuss the shape of the data/analysis using each of these forms as you
did in part 2. You do not need to recalculate outliers.
Option 2: Data without Outliers Write a thorough discussion of outliers. Your discussion
must include the definition of an outlier, the implications of outliers (both below and above
the normal limits), and the potential shape of the distribution. See page 306 of the
textbook.
Intended Population Interpretation: Write a one-sentence interpretation using the
appropriate/more accurate mean and standard deviation about your intended population.
Part 4: Inferential Analysis (Final Copy Due __4/29/21___)
Distribution: State which distribution you are using for the inferential analysis and why you used
that distribution.
Population Parameter Research: Return to part 1, introduction, to discuss the research article
that you have found. How does the article match your intended population? Does this parameter
match what you infer above? Use the population parameter mean value to make a claim.
Remember that this claim can be less, equal to, not equal to, or more than the parameter value.
Discuss why you believe your claim to be true. Include an APA style in-text citation, see reference
template below.
Hypothesis Testing: Using your original raw data state your claim based on the research that you
found. Using a 1% significance level, test your claim. Include the hypothesis statements,
standardized test statistic (rounded to two decimal places), P-value (rounded to four decimal
places), comparison and decision, and write the interpretation of your conclusion about the
intended population.
Part 5: Conclusion
Reflection: Reflect on this assignment by answering the following questions thoroughly.
1. How valid do you think your results are?
2. How do you think your sampling methods and/or data collection methods influenced your
results?
3. What changes would you make to your process? Justify your answer.
4. How did the assignment help you to better understand the process of collecting information
and making inferences about a population?
Reference: Include a correct APA formatted reference for the information cited in the introduction
as a basis for your claim.
