RES 710 University of Phoenix Statistical Test Types Discussion

Discussion 1Last week you completed the hypothesis test application, where you reviewed each of the
common statistical tests in detail. Refer to the information from that assignment and the data
you have been working with throughout this course.
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:

Which statistical test would be most appropriate for your variables? Why?
Include your own experience as well as 2 citations that align with or contradict your comments
as sourced from peer-reviewed academic journals, industry publications, books, and/or other
sources. Cite your sources according to APA guidelines. If you found information that
contradicts your experience, explain why you agree or disagree with the information.
Completed Hypothesis Test:
The five steps in hypothesis testing as it relates to my data are as follows:
1. Identify the research question and formulate the null and alternative hypotheses. As
discussed above, the research question is “How does discrimination affect African Americans
from rising above poverty?” the null and alternative views are “Poverty among African
Americans is a result of discrimination and lack of adequate education” and “Poverty among
African Americans is not a result of discrimination and lack of adequate education” respectively.
2. Select the appropriate statistical test. A chi-square test is the most appropriate approach to
discovering the relationship between education, discrimination, and poverty in black American
society.
3. Collect and analyze the data. The data for this study will be collected from The General
Social Survey and will include responses to the ‘GSS variables racdif1 and racdif3’ for the years
1977-2021 (Pennsylvania State University 2022). The data will be analyzed using a chi-square
test to determine if there is a significant relationship between poverty, discrimination, and
education in the African American community.
4. Calculate the test statistic and compare it to the critical value. The calculated test statistic
will be compared to the required value from the chi-square distribution table to determine if
one should reject the null hypothesis.
5. Interpret the results and conclusions. If the calculated test statistic exceeds the critical
value, relevant individuals will reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative view. This
would indicate a significant relationship between poverty, discrimination, and education in the
African American community. On the other hand, if the calculated test statistic is less than the
critical value, people will not reject the null hypothesis, and the relationship between these
variables would not be considered significant.

Discussion 2
Providing scholarly support for your research project is a necessary part of the process. Find
two scholarly sources that offer additional insight into your course project/mock study research
topic (as defined by the research question and/or hypothesis you’ve been working with
throughout this course).
Write a 250- to 300-word response to the following:

Briefly summarize each article and explain why each is relevant to your project.
Include 2 citations from peer-reviewed academic journals, industry publications, books, and/or
other sources. Cite your sources according to APA guidelines.
Student Response 1: Student response 1: Review the classmates’ posts and respond to at
least one in a minimum of 150 words. Explain why you agree or disagree. Then, share an
example from your professional experience to support your assertions.
There are several statistical tests that could potentially be appropriate for the variables you
have provided, depending on the specific research question you are trying to answer and the
characteristics of my data. One possibility is a chi-squared test of independence, which could be
used to determine whether there is a significant association between the variables “wrkstat”
(working status) and “wrkslf” (whether the individual is self-employed or works for someone
else). This test would allow you to determine if there is a relationship between these two
categorical variables (Schober &Vetter, 2019). Another option could be a t-test, which could be
used to compare the means of a continuous variable (such as “year”) between two different
groups (e.g., those who are self-employed versus those who are not). It is also possible that a
regression analysis could be appropriate, depending on the research question and the nature
of the variables. This could be used to examine the relationship between multiple variables, and
to predict the value of one variable based on the values of others (Feng et al., 2020). Ultimately,
the most appropriate statistical test will depend on the specific research question you are trying
to answer and the characteristics of my data. It may be necessary to perform multiple statistical
tests in order to fully understand the relationships between the variables.
