Overview
In this project, imagine you consult the chancellor of Crimson College, a fictional liberal arts
college, on how to incentivize healthier food choices among students in college dining halls
without changing the food options available. Crimson College has only two dining halls, A and
B, both of equal size and offering the same kind of food options each day. Upon meal plan
purchase, a student is randomly assigned to dining hall A or B, and their meal plan is honored
only in the assigned dining hall. A meal plan is valid throughout the quarter and all Crimson
College students purchase a meal plan as there are no other dining options available on campus.
Your plan is to use a behavioral “nudge,” a method popularized by a Nobel Prize winner in
Economics Richard Thaler: in dining hall A, you will clearly display, next to all the food items
available each day, a caloric label with an estimated number of calories contained in a single
portion of a dish. This way, when students in dining hall A select a particular food item, they will
be aware of the number of calories they consume. You hope that this information will deter
students from selecting higher-calorie meals and incentivize them to select lower-calorie meals.
You do not change anything in dining hall B, where food items are not accompanied by any
caloric labels. Assume that students dining in dining halls A and B do not communicate
regarding the number of calories contained in their food choices.
To help you evaluate your idea, the chancellor hires a team of assistants who survey a random
sample of 700 students on their food selection in the dining halls one week before and one week
after you introduce caloric labeling to dining hall A. Based on collected meal information, the
team of assistants compiles a report on daily caloric intake of each student at both these times.
In the data provided to you, each row represents one unique student; cells A2-A701 contain the
name of the dining hall a student is assigned to (A or B); cells B2-B701 contain the students’
total daily caloric intake when interviewed one week before introduction of caloric labeling; cells
C2-C701 contain their total daily caloric intake when interviewed one week after introduction of
caloric labeling. You can assume that all students report their food choices truthfully and that the
team of assistants makes no mistake while calculating the caloric value of each meal.

entries that are in the correct cells.
You MUST use Excel, NOT Google Sheets, NOT Numbers. Make sure you download
the file as an Excel spreadsheet. If you accidently open it in Google Sheets download it to
your computer as an Excel file, do NOT cut and paste to an Excel spreadsheet as you
might mess up the format and create errors that make it impossible for Autograder to read
your file.

Throughout the project, use a 95% confidence interval and assume that student populations dining in
dining halls A and B are both normal with equal variances. Do not round your answers as you perform
your calculations; reference relevant cells using Excel functions instead. When reporting your final
answers, round all numbers to the fourth decimal place.
(1) In the first part of this project, you want to test if, before the introduction of caloric labeling, the daily
caloric intake by students dining in dining halls A and B was indeed similar. To do this, start by
calculating the number of students surveyed at each dining hall. In cell F2, input the number of
students surveyed in dining hall A; in cell G2, input the number of students surveyed in dining hall B.
(HINT: use the COUNTIF function in Excel). Calculate sample mean of the caloric intake for
students dining in A and B. Input your results in cells F3 and G3 respectively. Calculate the observed
sample variance of the caloric intake for students dining in A and B. Input your results in cells F4 and
G4 respectively. (Use the VAR.S function in Excel).
(2) In cell F6, calculate the pooled variance. (HINT: Check page 24 of Chapter_8_Slides).
(3) Using t-value for a 95% confidence interval as well as the pooled variance derived in the previous
step, calculate the confidence limits for the mean difference in daily caloric intake in dining halls A
and B before the introduction of caloric labeling. Input your t-value in cell F7, your lower confidence
limit in cell F8, and your upper confidence limit in cell G8. Does your confidence interval include 0?
Answer “YES” or “NO” in cell H8. (HINT: Use the T.INV.2T function in Excel to help you derive
the appropriate t-value; Check page 25 of Chapter_8_Slides).
(4) In the second part of the project, you want to test if the daily caloric intake by students dining in
dining hall A changed after the introduction of caloric labeling; thus, for elements (4) through (6),
only include in your calculations the students dining in dining hall A. In column D (cells starting
with D2), calculate the difference in caloric intake before and after introduction of labelling for each
student in dining hall A (define the difference as the caloric intake after minus the caloric intake
before). Calculate point estimate for the population mean paired difference and input it in cell F11.
(Although this element will not be graded directly, these are necessary calculations for other elements
that will be graded.)
(5) In cell F13, calculate the sample standard deviation of the difference. (Use the STDEV.S function in
Excel).
(6) Using t-value for a 95% confidence interval, calculate the confidence limits for the difference in
means between the daily caloric intake in dining hall A before and after the introduction of caloric
labeling. Input your t-value in cell F14, your lower confidence limit in cell F15, and your upper
confidence limit in cell G15. Does your confidence interval include 0? Answer “YES” or “NO” in
cell H15. (HINT: Use the T.INV.2T function in Excel to help you derive the appropriate t-value;

When uploading the Excel spreadsheet to GradeScope, you will be prompted to provide a
name for the leaderboard. A leaderboard is a tool that allows you to monitor accuracy and
timing of your submission relative to others in the class.
You can pick your own leaderboard name, please make sure it is appropriate and
respectful, given that the leaderboard is visible to all students in the class. Use the same
leaderboard name for all submissions this quarter.
DO NOT use your real name as your leaderboard name. If you accidentally use your real
name as your leaderboard name, submit again, the original leaderboard entry will be
deleted.
The leaderboard will NOT affect your course grade at all. If you don’t want your
leaderboard name to be uniquely identified, you can type Optout Otter as your
leaderboard name.
DO NOT leave the leaderboard name blank, your submission will not be processed.
DO NOT share your leaderboard name with other students. A student’s leaderboard name
is known only to that particular student and course instructors.
Leaderboard ranks all submissions by the SUBMISSION TIME among the class
members. The earlier the submission, the higher the rank. Note though, the leaderboard
ONLY ranks those who got FULL SCORE on the autograder part of the assignment. For
example, if you and another student both got a full score, and you submitted earlier, your
leaderboard name will appear higher on the leaderboard than the other student’s. Please
notice that your leaderboard name would appear at the bottom of the leaderboard if your
submission scored less than FULL SCORE on the autograder part of the assignment.
After your submission, click on “Leaderboard” on the “Autograder Results page” to
check the ranking.
