Strategic Plan Template

This course will feature a cumulative assignment starting in Week 1 and concluding in Week 5. You will complete this assignment each week using the Strategic Plan Template provided. This document will be used in conjunction with the

Phoenix Hospital 5-Year Strategic Plan Scenario

. It is important that you read the scenario in its entirety prior to completing the Week 1 assignment. Make sure to refer back to the scene each week as instructed for these cumulative assignments. You will record all responses to the appropriate assignments in this document. Your faculty member will also provide feedback directly through this document. This document will break down the basic steps used in strategic planning to make a strategic decision in health care. While this scenario is specifically geared toward a hospital setting, the knowledge and skills you will possess at the end of this course can be applied to any health care facility (e.g., physician’s office, long-term care, etc.).

Week 1: Mission and

Vision for Phoenix Hospital

In this first assignment, you will create a mission and vision statement for Phoenix Hospital. It is important to read the Phoenix Hospital 5-Year Strategic Plan Scenario prior to completing this assignment. It is also recommended that you complete the other Week 1 assignment, “Importance of Mission and Vision Statements,” first because it provides foundational knowledge necessary for completing this assignment.

Create a mission and vision statement for Phoenix Hospital. Remember that your mission and vision statements should be a strong representation of the following:

· Organization

· Organization’s goals

· Stakeholders that the organization impacts

· Values of the organization

The mission for Phoenix Hospital

Vision for Phoenix Hospital

We endeavor to create a safe environment by focusing on precautions, safety, and the well-being of our patients through integrated clinical practice, education, and research.

Our vision is to be the unrivaled leader in improving health care quality and lowering costs for patients in the communities we serve.

The statement of mission, vision, and values allows hospitals and healthcare organizations to determine what they want to achieve and provide the right level of care for their patients. Mission and vision statements serve different purposes, but they are used interchangeably. The mission statement defines the purpose of today’s enterprise. It begins with phrases such as “we are,” “we serve,” and “our purpose is …”. Most business vision statements, including those related to health care, are indescribably verbose while reading. However, the vision statement should be short, like just a sentence. Making the statement, as mentioned earlier, may appear to be a difficult effort but at the same time, it’s very important for the organization. On the other hand, these statements assist the organization in concentrating on the most vital components of the organization or business. When done correctly, it can save money and time while enhancing its chances of success.

When it comes to these declarations, the company’s articles can be altered as the organization’s or business’s demands change, and it is essential to remember that they are living documents. According to Woodside (2018), these utterances are frequently viewed as “symbolic artifacts” that must be preserved. However, it will be perceived as a wastage of time if one cannot consider the importance of these statements. The issue may be that the organization will have no clear direction on what it wants to achieve. From an organizational standpoint, the issue is that they are not focused on what they want to do and how they will accomplish it. The steps or words that follow will assist in giving clear direction to the organization. On the other hand, strategy refers to one or more approaches to accomplishing a vision statement through a mission statement. There may be just one vision and mission statement, but there may be several tactics.

Week 2: Market Analysis for Phoenix Hospital

Review the Phoenix Hospital 5-Year Strategic Plan Scenario.

Research current health care events that influence hospital or other health care facility performance. Consider using the article review from the Week 2 assignment, “Understanding Strategic Decision-Making in Health Care,” if applicable.

Complete the chart using a minimum of 700 words with the following information:

· Identify 3 major market factors from the Phoenix Hospital scenario.

· Analyze how the major market factors selected will affect the performance of the hospital in the next 3 years.

· Consider real-life current events in health care and how those could affect hospital performance.

Major market factor

Analyze how the major market factor affects hospital performance.

1. Patients

In any industry, there are various factors that will influence consumer behavior. However, in healthcare, the prevalence rate of various diseases like chronic diseases will have an impact on health care organizations. The continued growth rate of chronic disease will impact strategic decisions at Phoenix Hospital. This will in turn impact the performance at the hospital. The growth of chronic diseases will impact the care management model at the hospital. A care management model is a patient-centered approach that assists patients and their support systems in managing medical conditions. The care management model includes care coordination activities aimed at helping those with chronic diseases.

The demographic data on patients will have an impact on the hospital’s performance in the next three years. The demographic data like the age of the patient affect the decisions being made by the hospital. The demographic data shows which disease is prevalent and which gender and age. For example, cancer is common in females while ulcers are common in males (Pensap & Mekhum, 2020). The data on age and income can also help the hospital in making important decisions. The population over sixty years will increase five years from now. This population is prone to chronic diseases which means the hospital should implement strategies that will effectively provide coordinated care activities.

2. Technology

Technology has had an impact on most of the industries in the world. In healthcare, technology has changed the way things are being done. The healthcare industry is one of the biggest beneficiaries of advancements in technology. The hospital will require various technological advancements to enable it to remain competitive. One of the advancements that will affect its performance in the next three years is the electronic medical records system. The system is currently in its first phase and should change the way the hospital utilizes patient data. Some of the advantages of having the system include; faster sharing of patient data between clinicians, reduction in medical errors, and effective diagnosis of patients. The system will give the hospital a competitive advantage and help the hospital achieve its mission of creating a safe environment.

The system will also improve the performance of the hospital. A system that reduces medical errors at the hospital has a positive impact on performance. Changes to the MRI Unit will also have an impact on performance at the hospital. The current MRI Unit is experiencing downtime and the staff has already complained about delays for patients. Improving the MRI Unit will positively impact performance both currently and three years from now. There will be reduced delays for patients which will improve efficiency. The emergency department has two ambulances that provide services to the county. Changes to the emergency department which will see an increase in ambulances will impact performance within the next three years. The other technological changes which will impact performance at Phoenix Hospital include; revamping the employee gym and changes to the cardiology department. The cardiology department will require more cath lab-trained staff to improve on performance. The delays occasioned by lack of trained cath labs I impacting on performance negatively.

3. Competition

There is a fight for market share in the county with Hanover County Hospital gaining an upper hand due to the upgrades they have made to their facility. More upgrades from the competition are likely to impact the market share of the hospital. Increased competition will have an impact on performance at the hospital. Competition is known to provide a reason for improving performance. The loss of market share to Hanover County Hospital is likely to spur performance at Phoenix Hospital. The management and employees will want to regain their position in the market and improve market share. The management will make the strategic changes required including upgrades that will improve on performance. The employees will improve on the quality f care being given to the patient to help in creating a competitive advantage. The improved services will be in line with the mission and vision of the hospital.

Telehealth is one of the technological advancements that are impacting performance in healthcare. The growth of Telehealth was spurred in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Monaghesh & Hajizadeh (2020), Telehealth was effective in preventing, diagnosing, treating, and controlling diseases during the pandemic. At the hospital, Telehealth will impact performance positively. Healthcare reforms are also impacting n performance. These reforms have seen changes to the value-based healthcare model. The model ensures higher patient satisfaction and better outcomes.

Week 5: Final Decision for Phoenix Hospital

This week, you will review your work in the Strategic Design Template in order to make a decision or recommendations about the 5-year strategic plan for Phoenix Hospital. Prior to making your decision or recommendations, it is important to review your work in this template, compiled research, and faculty feedback.

Write a 260- to 350-word paper that details your strategic decision or recommendation for the Phoenix Hospital. Include the following in your paper:

· Identify the decision or recommendations you will make regarding Phoenix Hospital.

· Support your decision with the analysis made throughout this template.

· Identify how the decision or recommendations will support the strategic plan for Phoenix Hospital.

The mission of phoenix hospital is to create a safe environment by focusing on precautions, safety, and the well-being of our patients through integrated clinical practice, education, and research. Therefore, nurses must use their expertise to address patients’ needs and increase the patient experience. Besides, the vision of the hospital is to be the unrivaled leader in improving health care quality and lowering costs for patients in the communities we serve. Therefore, the administration should work hand in hand with caregivers and other staff members to ensure quality results.

The staff should be educated on the importance of caregivers in caring for patients in both hospitals and homes (Banka et al., 2015). Hence caregivers should be turned into allies. Similarly, a culture of shared accountability and diversity should be created. This will help in responding to patients’ needs and decrease conflicts respectively. Providing a diversity synergy in the workplace increases the number of patients as the hospital will attract patients from every culture and background. On the other end, preparing clinical staff to work with caregivers and creating a culture of shared accountability increases the care quality.

Lastly, the use of technology is key to successful operations in any industry. Therefore it should also focus on research and innovation to help in rapid discoveries of new treatment and prevention techniques. Besides, Phoenix Hospital should incorporate Integrated Medical Recorded System fully. This will help in organizing both caregiver and patient’s time. The system will give the hospital a competitive advantage and help the hospital achieve its mission of creating a safe environment. It will also improve the performance at the hospital. A system that reduces medical errors at the hospital has a positive impact on performance.
