Sumerians

For this assignment, you will have to do some research on the legacy of Sumer. As mentioned in this module, not only was Sumer the oldest civilization, but Sumerians left us a rich heritage. Their legacy includes innovations in astronomy, architecture, medicine, technology, government, art, religion, mathematics, writing, and much more.

Instructions:

The assignment requires summarizing in 300 words what we know of their contribution in one of these fields. You can first do a search to discover what the innovations of Sumerians were and choose one of these to research.

• Keep in mind that this is a 300-word assignment. This means that you are required to summarize your findings accurately and concisely. You have to dig deeper than what is in your textbook or what you read as part of this module. For example, you shouldn’t just write a general paper on the fact that they built ziggurats. Instead, you could write about how ziggurats were built or how the Sumerians made bricks. If you want to write about cuneiforms, you should research what Sumerians used to write with or how they produced the tablets.

Think of it this way: In 300-words, you have to convince the reader that the Sumerians made advances in the field you choose to research. Think beyond just making a list. This is an opportunity for you to write as if you’re an archaeologist and this paper is your first chance to share your discovery with others.
