Formal Paper: Read the article assigned
Consider
1. In all previous cultures, children ordinarily accepted responsibility for the well-being of
their parents in old age; and in various societies, the children were so held accountable in
law. Why has this form of responsibility decayed in the twentieth century? Can you think
of political and social causes for the care of elderly parents being turned over to public
agencies?
2. Can you name seven or eight voluntary associations or organizations, not subsidized or
directed by government, that perform important services in your community or in
America generally? Explore the benefits from this kind of involvement as opposed to
“letting the government do it.”
3. Responsible citizenship sometimes brings risks – all the way from unpopularity in some
local dispute to pushing forward under enemy fire in military action. How may schools
help to teach the rising generation the high importance of performing duties that may be
dangerous?
4. Are you and I personally responsible for our decisions and actions, or are we simply
creatures of our environment, “conditioned” to respond in one way or another to events
and challenges? Marshal the arguments on either side of this question, and then consider
the probable social consequences of believing in freedom of the will, or believing that
society, rather than the individual person, is responsible for citizen’s actions.
5. What are you doing to help preserve the great principles on which this nation and your
personal freedoms are based?
The topic of the reading is civil responsibility. The questions at the end of that reading
and listed above here, deal with the responsibility for older parents, organizations that
have stepped in to make the responsibility of citizens lighter, the risks of responsible
citizenship, who should be held accountable for responsibility, and preserving the great
principles. That said, the topic of your paper DOES NOT have to be about caring for our
older parents, it could be about another topic that DEALS with Civil Responsibility. You
will still need to read the article before you select your topic.
Write your essay using these questions to guide your thesis. Remember, do not use
contractions or first person pronouns, you, and we. According to the “Little, Brown Compact
Your Last Name 2
Handbook,” The first person I is sometimes appropriate to express personal opinions, but
academic writers tend to avoid it and make conclusion speak for themselves. The first-person we
can connect with readers and invite them to think along, but, again many academic writers avoid
it. The second person you is appropriate only in addressing readers directly (as in this handbook),
and even then it may seem condescending or too chummy. Definitely avoid using or implying
you in conversational expressions such as, You know what I mean and Don’t take this the wrong
way.
You need to have four sources, you can use the one I give you and three other that
backs you up to make four. If you do not use the source for your civil responsibility, you
will still need at least four sources. They all need to be cited in the source list and within
your paper. If you fail to do so, you will receive a zero for this assignment.
Place the header within the margin with your last name and page number starting with 1.
You will use MLA style of citation. You will have a heading at the top left of your paper, you
will list your thesis, the main points of your paper, and the summary point., then you will start a
new page, placing a title in the middle of the top line, one double space and indent to start your
paper. The paper will be 4 to 5 pages.
You will use double spacing and remove any extra spacing before or after
paragraphs. In addition, you will use one-inch side margins, Times New-Roman size 12 font,
and use college writing. (You can check this yourself by going to Spell Check, checking “Check
grammar,” click on options and set the options to the required style of either MLA or APA (This
has to be completed manually). Once you are within the options page, look about 2/3 ways
down, there is a drop down box for “Writing Style.” You need to select “Grammar and Style.”
Click on the “Settings” box next to “Grammar and Style.” For APA and under Required, I have
“always,” “inside,” and “don’t check” selected. Under the other boxes to check off, I have
everything, including “Passive Sentences” and “Use of First Person” checked.
Once you have the Grammar and Style set. Go back to the first options page. I check:
