Topic 1 (of 2)

In our society, we encounter moral questions every day. Television shows and films commonly present characters who must face moral dilemmas and choose a course of action. You can see this in both dramas and sitcoms, like “Dexter,” “Law & Order,” “The Office,” “”Scandal,” and “Breaking Bad,” and in films, such as I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Avatar, and The Blind Side.

Choose a television show, film, or piece of literature that you believe suggests a moral choice. First, provide a brief overview of the show, film, or piece of literature, and then explain the story which features a moral question/ethical dilemma. What was the result of this dilemma/moral question? Was the rationale for this choice convincing? In your Discussion response(s), consider how the categories of morality, such as self-interest, altruism, moral absolutism, or moral relativism, are portrayed in these decisions. Incorporate a connection to the Unit 3 reading material in your response; include APA formatting.

Hello everyone,
I have chosen Alex Cross who is a detective who has been written into many novels by James Paterson, my favorite author.  Merry Christmas Alex Cross is one of the new releases that I read not long ago.  In this novel Alex Cross gets called to a crime scene where an ex-husband is holding his children, ex-wife and the new husband hostage.   Being the lead negotiator on the scene has to try to find a way for the hostages to be released and not get hurt.  Alex puts himself in harm’s way to try to reason with him but the ex-husband will not give any of them up.  By coaxing the ex-husband into the kitchen and being told by the swat team there is a clear shot; Alex knows it is the only way.  Hoping that he only gets wounded he finds a way to get him in the kitchen knowing that if he doesn’t do this he may lose two kids and two adults.   Luckily he was only wounded.

In this scenario there is no self-interest or concern for self-welfare. I believe in this case he was acting with morally altruism and moral mathematics. As the text explains it in Janaro & Altshuler on page 368, that altruism is an action that is made with a greater concern for others (Janaro & Altshuler, 2012).  It also states on page 370 about moral mathemaatics “The greatest good for the greatest number” (Janaro & Altshuler, 2012).  The question would be is the life that is threating four others worth taking for the greater good?  If there is no other way but to sacfarcie the wrong doer to save lives then my opinion would be yes.
This would change in different situations. So changing my moral for different situations becomes moral relativism (Janaro & Altshuler, 2012).

The Cosby Show is about a African American family in New York going through your everyday problems. The mother (Clare) was an attorney, father (Cliff) was a doctor, and they had five children. The parents raised their children under the best practices.
Theo’s (son) classmate hid drugs in one of his book without him knowing. Clare accidently knocks over his books, and discovers the drugs. She immediately thinks her son is an addict. Both parents confronts Theo, and he denies it belongs to him. At this point, Theo is very upset to the point he wants to fight his classmate. He convinces the classmate to come back to his house to confess to his parents. After the classmate confess, he also agrees to do counseling. Cliff assured Theo he believed him, and he didn’t have to go through the lengths of violence to prove he was telling the truth. As the classmate watched Theo and Cliff talking, you can tell he was impressed about their relationship. Theo choice was rationale because if he didn’t go through the lengths, I don’t think the classmate would have ever considered doing the counseling. From the look on his face (as Theo & Cliff talking), its obvious he didnt have a relationship with his parents. I think Theo protrayed self interest because he wanted his parents to know he didn’t do drugs, and he’d do anything to prove it.

The text discusses “whistle-blowing” and issues of morality and work. If you were in a situation where your employer was acting unethically, would you blow the whistle? What are some of the elements to consider in making this decision? Which factors would you need to ensure before you would report what you know? Which factors might prevent you from acting? Incorporate a connection to the Unit 3 reading material in your response; include APA formatting.

My last job was working at a small advertising agency with just under 10 full-time employees. I was an account executive, responsible for writing client proposals, reviewing bills, reconciling the retainer against completed work, and all client relations. I recall a time when I realized that we had a rather large variance in favor of the client. I brought this to my bosses attention hoping that we would share this with our client and issue a credit. My boss (who was also the owner of the company) would not let me issue the credit, which I believed was morally wrong.

One of the five moral questions in philosophy is, “Does the end ever justify the means?” The overall business goal of making money and being profitable does not outweigh the risk to our reputation should the client have learned of our overcharge. We could have lost a very good client had we lost their trust – ultimately loosing much more money in the end. One of the reasons I left my previous job was based on the lack of morality of a man who was supposed to be the leader of the company. Unfortunately, this was not the only situation and I never felt comfortable covering up his wrong business habits.

“Whistle-blowing, there is no easy moral victory here, but if nothing else, we learn from them that doing the right thing not only takes courage but the willingness to stand quite alone”(R. Janaro. T.Altshuler, 2012, pg 368). I have been in a position where my superior was acting unethically, and the statement I quoted sums up “Whistle-blowing” perfectly, you do have to have the courage, and know that you will stand alone if you start the process of turning in a superior acting unethically. First and foremost, from personal experience, you have to have all the information and as much documentation as possible to prove your case, you cannot rely on the word of others to support your findings. I was new to the company and the biggest fear that would have prevented me from turning in my boss was losing my job or retaliation form that person or others. Next, you can’t discuss you initial observations with anyone you work with, this only creates rumor mills, and can hurt your reputation. Finally, once you have obtained all the information if at all possible consult with someone outside your work place, a Human Recourses Manager in another store if you do not feel comfortable speaking to someone directly in your location, I have found throughout the years most companies will listen to you if you have evidence and in my case it took a long time for them to finally fire my superior. I did not talk about the issue with anyone else other than the HR Manager, they acted ethically and it was kept confidential, I did not receive any retaliation nor did anyone find out I was the Whistle-blower.

Journal Topic minimum of 200–250 words

This week, the focus is on ethics and morality. Media articles often focus on corrupt business practices or individuals who have committed criminal acts, etc., and cynics may argue that morality is less significant in the 21st Century. What do you think? Identify one element of morality (i.e., altruism, moral relativism, etc.), and explain, in your own words, what this element of morality means to you. Consider the existence of morality in modern society. Is there such a concept as a moral code by which individuals should live?
