Scenario

Although SC has many departments, you will only be considering the Sales and
Accounting departments – otherwise, you would be working on this forever.
1 web server (accessible by the public)
2 application servers (one in each department)
2 database servers (one in each department)
2 file servers (one in each department)
2 print servers (one in each department)
And 30 workstations (15 in each department)
The web server runs Linux/Apache, the other servers run Microsoft Windows Server, and
the workstations run Microsoft Windows.
The network is connected through a series of switches, is not physically connected to
other networks, and runs Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4).
BOTH departments listed above are on the same physical LAN, in the same domain
(indeed, all the other departments in corporate HQ have the same configuration).
BOTH departments listed above are in the same building, on the same floor.
The network is protected by a single border firewall.
The senior network architect, whom you work for directly, has verified the company’s
business goals and has determined the features and functions required to meet those
goals.
NOTE: the Security Consulting network architecture will change when create a design for an
ERP system in Part 2.
The senior network architect has asked you to create a network design that includes the
following components:

Current infrastructure elements
A logical topology that separates the Accounting and Sales departments
Redundant communications
Justification for continuing with IPv4 or upgrading to IPv6.
Tasks
For this part of the project, perform the following tasks:
1. Conduct research to determine the best network design to ensure security of internal access
while retaining public website availability.
IT 4336 – Fall 2023 – Semester Project – Part 1: Network Design
2. Provide a written description of the current network design. Identify major network elements
(e.g., servers, switches, gateways) and their locations within the private and protected
network segments. You can make a few recommendations here for Part 2, but this is really a
description of Security Consultants current network.
3. Include a high-level plan that ensures communications are available 24/7.
Advice – in the past, some students have recommended that Security Consultants should
hold “meetings” and that would resolve this issue. I don’t know where they got that idea
from. If that is your recommendation, you will receive a zero for this category.
4. Recommend whether to continue using IPv4 or upgrade to IPv6 and explain why.
5. Create a basic network diagram that illustrates the current network. Part 2 is where you
will incorporate your security enhancements. You CANNOT place a DMZ in Part 1, as
Security Consultants doesn’t currently have one. Include a few workstations to represent
all workstations on the internal network. The diagram will be very high level at this stage and
include only necessary details. You must use a software tool; this diagram cannot be
drawn by hand. You will update this design later in the project.
6. Create a draft report detailing all information as supportive documentation.
7. Cite sources, where appropriate.
Components of the Submission
You will submit TWO documents:
1. A document with the written description that covers the elements in the task list that is in
accordance with the template provided.
2. A document (PowerPoint, Word, Visio, draw.io, or some other document) containing the
network diagram. Under no circumstances is the network diagram to be in the same
document as the written description document. If you do this, you will receive a zero
for the portion of your Part 1 that is the network diagram.
3. Your written document must be a minimum of two pages and a maximum of three
pages (for example, it cannot be just one page of written documentation, with only the
sources on the second page).
4. See the Overall Formatting document for the number of sources required in Part 1.
Formatting
See the Overall Formatting Document and the Phase 1 Template.
IMPORTANT – when using the template – keep the sub-headings but remove my
instructions below each heading stating what should be in that section, how many words it
should contain, etc. If you keep my instructions in your document, that will result in a 40%
deduction from the formatting portion of your grade.
YOU CANNOT SUBMIT YOUR WRITTEN FILE AS AN ADOBE pdf FILE. IT MUST
BE A WORD DOCUMENT. IF IT IS IN ADOBE PDF, IT WILL NOT BE GRADED.

INTRODUCTION
You should have a brief one paragraph introduction describing the scenario in your own words.
The paragraph should contain about 50 to 100 words.
WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF CURRENT NETWORK DESIGN
This is the “meat” of your document for this part. It should be multiple paragraphs long,
containing the entire written (description) of the current network design. It should be about 300 –
600 words in length.
HIGH-LEVEL PLAN TO ENSURE 24/7 ACCESS
Here you will want to describe how you would do this. This should be about 100 – 300 words in
length.
RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING IPv4 vs IPv6i
Here you will need a thorough description of the advantages and disadvantages of (1) staying
with IPv4 or (2) converting to IPv6. Then make your recommendation. This should be about 200
– 300 words in length.
Your references should be at the end of the document, as end notes. So they will be
automatically placed in the document. You will NOT have a section entitled REFERENCES.
