Editing Wikipedia

Wikipedia has changed the way people access information. If it is general human knowledge, chances are you can find something about it on Wikipedia. The ever evolving and open nature of Wikipedia makes it a poor choice for academic research, but it’s still an excellent starting point, and reasonably reliable source for quick knowledge. For this assignment, you will be contributing to it.

Hidden away among Wikipedia’s content and editing sources, there is the Wikipedia:Stub page. A stub is an article that is deemed too short to adequately cover the subject. They are innumerable, scattered across dozens of categories, each begging for expansion. Your task is to select a stub of your choice, and develop it to a worthier length and content. Due to the countless options, I suggest doing a quick glance at how the articles are categorized, and then search for something in particular that you already find interesting. Are you a sports fan? Pick a stub involving your favorite sport, team, etc. and go from there. History buff? Look into the era you’re most knowledgeable of or interested in.

The best assignments, the ones worthy of publication on Wikipedia, are the ones that strive to offer as complete and accurate a picture of the subject as possible. To meet this goal, you will be held to the following requirements, and are encouraged to surpass them in striving for completeness. Your article must:

· Increase the length by at least 1000 words. For comparison, an average 4 page essay runs about 1500. For the first draft, please put all information previously written in the article stand out by coloring it differently.

· Use at least 3 sources. You may use one source already present, and must find at least more new to the article.

· Write a 2 page reflection, using standard MLA format, of what you chose, why you chose it, how you approached this assignment, and what you learned from it. This will be due on 5/13.

The sources for a stub article are either inadequate or poorly used, so you will have to expand on them and make better use of them. If you are unable to find adequate sourcing, or cannot write enough for a topic, it might simply be too small, and you should consider a new one.

The following pages are good starting places for finding your topic:

In the coming weeks, we’ll be discussing how to best find and use outside sources, and how to integrate them according to Wikipedia’s style. Remember, writing to Wikipedia’s standards means any English speaking person with an Internet connection might read this, so plan accordingly. I will be looking into creating a profile to post the articles that meet these standards. If you feel up to the task, talk to me about doing a page that does not currently exist on Wikipedia.
