Annotated Bibliography

Groes, Sebastian. “Ian McEwan and the Modernist Consciousness of the City in Saturday.” Ian McEwan. Ed. Sebastian Groes. New York: Continuum Books, 2009. 99-114. Print. Comment by WSU: Basic Works Cited Format

Groes’ essay focuses on the relationship that Henry Perowne has with the city. This is useful because it helps me to understand the politics in the story. Comment by WSU: 1-sentence summary of the article Comment by WSU: 1-sentence evaluation of it’s usefulness

Haffenden, John. “Ian McEwan.” Conversations with Ian McEwan. Ed. Ryan Roberts. Jackson: UP Of Mississippi, 2010. 26-46. Print.

In 1983 Haffenden spoke with McEwan about his recently published novel The Comfort of Strangers. This interview provides contrast to a 2005 interview of a similar nature between Zadie Smith and McEwan.

Ryan, Kiernan. “Sex, Violence and Complicity: Martin Amis and Ian McEwan.” An Introduction to Contemporary Fiction. Ed. Rod Mengham. Malden, MA: Polity Press, 1999. 203- 218. Print.

Kiernan’s essay focuses on the situational discomfort that reader’s experience when reading McEwan (and Amis’) works of fiction. This gives me a good background in reader response.
