GCU Public Health Issue Capstone

The Course Capstone Project is a research and analysis project sustained over the duration of the course. You are expected to complete work on your Course Capstone each week and meet regularly with your learning team for peer feedback.  The end product of your research and analysis will be a 6- to 8-page written report that involves identifying and researching a public health problem, analyzing and interpreting statistical data, and presenting your findings and recommendations to community stakeholders and leaders. You will also create a slideshow/poster presentation that you will narrate to present your findings and recommendations as you would at a conference of public health professionals.

Keep the following points in mind as you develop your project:

  • Treat the Course Capstone Project as a portfolio assignment that you can present to potential employers. You want to be able to prove that you can identify a public health problem; collect, analyze, and interpret data; and present your findings to stakeholders who can make decisions based on your recommendations.
  • You can collect data by researching existing data, researching other people’s sample data collections, or creating your own data collection tool (e.g., a simple survey or focus group) and requesting feedback.
  • Biostatistics is used by epidemiologists and other health professionals to analyze the health of populations. The validity of the data and the reliability of conclusions are crucial to effective decision-making and program implementation.
  • The correct interpretations of biostatistical analyses help influence how block grant money gets allocated to state and local governments for public health initiatives.
  • Your tasks this week:

  • Consider public health issues that affect certain populations (e.g., your workplace, city, state, etc.). Ensure that the health issues consist of health problems that will allow you to compare the disparities between two populations by interpreting the results of statistical analyses.
  • Choose an issue that interests you and conduct research to find out more about that issue. Consider the following questions: Has this issue been widely studied? What populations are most affected? Are there accessible data sets you can use for analysis? Are these data sets large enough for you to make valid conclusions about your research question?
  • Brainstorm several research questions that you can answer by analyzing and interpreting statistical data surrounding the issue.
  • Formulate a specific research question that you can answer by analyzing and interpreting statistical data surrounding the issue.
