HUSV301 Assignment Two: Bedlam
Respond to the following questions by number rather than in an essay-style paper.
Most of the questions are asking you to use critical thinking to form ideas and/or opinions. Some of the
questions require you to use resources that are to be cited and referenced. Use a formal reference page
to record references in APA style. Resources are provided, but you are also welcome to include
resources found from your own research.
Read Chapter One in Introduction to Human Services (Woodside & McClam, 2019).
Watch the documentary, “Bedlam”. Be sure to watch, not just listen, because there are points presented
in writing you will miss if you just listen. When using direct quotes, or referring to specific scenes, from
the documentary, be sure to accurately quote statements and “TIMESTAMP” where the statement was
made. If you refer to a specific scene, it also requires a timestamp.
1. What did you learn from watching the documentary, Bedlam? What lasting impact do you take
away from watching Bedlam? (1/2 page)
2. For full points, A-C should be 1 – 1 ½ pages in length total. Support your reasoning in this section
with evidence from the Bedlam documentary and from Chapter One in the textbook. Cite your
sources using the APA-style format:
A. Identify at least 5 human services roles portrayed in the documentary. Refer to Chapter One
in the textbook and describe the human service categories these providers are performing under
from the following:
• social care
• social control
• rehabilitation
Also, the roles each of the 5 would fall under:
• behavior changer
• caregiver
• communicator
• participant empowerer
• teacher/educator
B. Describe possible patient perceptions about interactions and behaviors of each of the
professional roles in relation to supporting patient self-sufficiency.
C. Identify 2 indirect support community-based human services roles (seen or unseen) and how
these roles contribute to teamwork on behalf of the population addressed in the documentary.
3. In your opinion, what allows discrimination against mental illness to continue? Here, consider
stigma related to: personal identity, family, friends, work/school, the criminal justice system,
medical care training and provision, research bias, representation in the media, slurs and ‘jokes’,
and/or forms of systemic injustice. (1/2 page)
