Literature review

In health, sciences carrying out one’s duties and tasks as needed be successfully is largely dependent on various factors with one of the major factors of great importance being empathy. There are many definitions that have been put forward to explain empathy by different scholars in all of them a common and simplistic definition is one stating that “Empathy is putting oneself in another’s shoe” the definition is metaphorical but in layman’s terms it is trying to understand the pain that one is undergoing by imagining yourself to be in the same amount of pain and thus offer help as if it were your own self you are caring for. Scientifically empathy has been defined as being able to understand the feeling of others and communicating this to them to allow them to know that they have been understood.

This paper aims to discuss the importance of empathy in health science with the intention to majorly;

· Understand Empathy.

· Understand the importance of the practice in health science.

· Understand how empathy can be exercised by practitioners.

· Develop the skills necessary to fully and effectively employ empathy in one’s practice.

The paper concludes by providing a review of the sources used in the paper and future recommendations in the event that gaps are noticed in the process of this research. Additionally, the paper aims to create awareness of a much important area in the practice of health science which may be overlooked sometimes while ta the same time as result the paper serves an educative and informative approach in the whole industry.

Wilkinson, H., Whittington, R., Perry, L., & Eames, C. (2017). Examining the relationship between burnout and empathy in healthcare professionals: A systematic review. Burnout Research, 6, 18-29.

This paper discusses the relationship present between burnout and empathy in the healthcare profession, while the main definition of empathy remains unchanged as discussed in the earlier sessions of this paper it is imperative that burn-out be explained, which is a psychological phenomenon affecting people characterized by physical tiredness, helplessness, negative attitude towards work and one’s own self. The paper defines the core reason for burnout in healthcare practitioners to be related to external factors affecting one’s life either from the work environment or from home. Due to the gravity of the healthcare profession and the commitment required to make the profession successful since it practically involves saving lives, there have been several attempts to explain the occurrence of burnout and how it can be reduced. Because this phenomenon directly impacts the standard offered by healthcare practitioners. This study is important to the topic of the paper as it shows ways through which empathy can be affected unintentionally or intentionally in healthcare.

Howick, J., & Rees, S. (2017). Overthrowing barriers to empathy in healthcare: empathy in the age of the Internet. Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 110(9), 352-357.

This paper discusses the barriers present in the practice of empathy in healthcare, as seen in the paper healthcare practitioners are under most circumstances willing to include empathy in their practice only to be barred by less time in caring for patients, long paperwork, and guidelines that demand a given level of practice leaving less room for effective practice of empathy. The paper further analyzes the importance of practicing empathy in healthcare with some of the major benefits including; a reduction in pain and anxiety among patients in addition to improving the quality of care and well-being of patients while reducing burnout in healthcare practitioners. The paper is important since it brings to light the intrinsic barriers present in the practice of empathy whereby the awareness of these barriers makes it easy to find ways through which measures can be implemented to reduce and effectively implement ways that can be applied to curb the barriers impediment to the practice of empathy in healthcare. The contribution of the paper to the final topic is in the in-depth analysis of the barriers present in the practice of empathy by healthcare practitioners.

Fields, S. K., Mahan, P., Tillman, P., Harris, J., Maxwell, K., & Hojat, M. (2011). Measuring empathy in healthcare profession students using the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy: health provider–student version. Journal of interprofessional care, 25(4), 287-293.

Empathy is one of the important mutual relationships present in healthcare between the practitioners and the patients. However, while healthcare practitioners may find it challenging to carry out empathy effectively, to a given degree they can exercise this virtue, this cannot be said for students who are new to the profession or those just starting. The paper analyzes ways through which students can effectively practice empathy by measuring it through the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy. Since the center of the paper is to analyze the practice of empathy among student healthcare practitioners, the paper widens the scope of the topic by enriching the paper with different areas through which empathy can be exercised and the difficulty in each. This paper is important to the final topic of discussion as it allows for further information on empathy not only among established practitioners but also among those starting and this way more in-depth analysis of the topic.

Merlini, R., & Gatti, M. (2015). Empathy in healthcare interpreting: Going beyond the notion of role.

Empathy is a virtue that has been fostered in the healthcare industry for several years with different scholars writing about and finding ways through which this can be enhanced and improved in healthcare. One of the various ways through which empathy is bared in the healthcare practice is through the roles carried out by each practitioner in healthcare. The paper analyzes the ways through which empathy is applied by practitioners when assigned different roles in their tasks. The paper further analyzes the inbuilt core elements of empathy and how this is applied in the identification of various ways through which the elements contribute towards the larger attribution of the elements in the achievement of the goal of empathy. This paper is important to the topic of discussion as it allows the individual analysis of the various ways through which roles play and affect empathy.

Smith, K. A., Bishop, F. L., Dambha-Miller, H., Ratnapalan, M., Lyness, E., Vennik, J., … & Howick, J. (2020). Improving empathy in healthcare consultations—a secondary analysis of interventions. Journal of general internal medicine, 35(10), 3007-3014.

Due to the evidence that has been presented by various studies on the benefits of empathy in the practice of healthcare, there has been an increasing need to encourage this practice among practitioners with healthcare institutions applying different teaching methods to instill the skill in their teams. Due to the various ways applied in the teaching of the virtue the results may vary, the paper discusses the ways through which despite the variation of the teaching of the skill the application can be effective and the initial objectives achieved. The paper is useful to the study as it allows for further analysis of the effectiveness of different teaching methods in achieving empathy.
