My research objective is the quality of daycare compared to the price one pays.

Research Objectives:

A. Interactions between child and caregiver are they sensitive, harsh, detached, or involved with the children?

B. What learning activities does the daycare offer?

C. What are the health and safety aspects of the child care environment?

D. What is the presence of appropriate furnishings, equipment, and curricular material?

E. How is the structure of the daycare laid out? For examples, teacher to student ratio, teacher previous experience, and specialized training?

FOCUS GROUPS:

You are Focus Group 1
Please answer these question and discuss them as if you were having the conversation together about daycares.
Quality
What is quality daycare to you?
What are some of the changes you would like to see your current childcare provider make?
Reasoning
Why have you chosen your current daycare?
What are some of the changes you would like to see your current childcare provider make?

Cost

How do you feel about the costs of the childcare you receive?
What is included in your childcare services? Meals, activities, etc.?

Answer:

paid $1

4

0 a week and that included lunches and snacks. It was Summer Grove Baptist ECEC. I chose this daycare because it was a class B daycare which meant that they were able to chose their own curriculum which included bible lessons that would not be allowed if they were class A. They also did not accept any type of government assistance, although that was not a factor in my choice. There was a set number of children per age group and if the limit was reached, no more were accepted. There was always a lengthy wait list for enrollment. There was a certified teacher and 1 aide for each group. I think there were

6

or

8

kids in Rylee’s class. The days were very structured and included singing, bible lessons, art, gym, free play and of course morning and afternoon snack, lunch and nap time. The center did regular drug screening on all employees and they had to pass a background check. One thing I really liked is that any time there was ANY kind of incident (biting, a fall, anything) I received a detailed written report about it. I also was given a daily progress report telling me what she ate that day, how long she napped, etc. I felt it was on the expensive side but worth every penny. I can’t think of anything about this daycare that I didn’t like. To me, quality daycare is exactly what we recieved, a well rounded, structured day in the safest environment possible.

Group 2

· Quality daycare to me is not just a place, it is the people. I want my child in a clean safe environment that has a staff that truly cares for the children and their well-being.

· I do not have daycare now, but when I did I would like to have seen the employees take pride in themselves and their jobs. A first impression is lasting and if I walk in and you look sloppy, then that is how I assume you will do your job. When it comes to my child doing the job half hearted is not an option.

· When Hannah was in daycare, the one I chose was because it was the nicer of the two we had in town. It offered hot meals, a better student teacher ratio and the teacher was truly into her kids.

· The cost of child care is extremely high. But have found that you get what you pay for most of the time. A more expensive daycare is going to offer more, employee people that represent the clientele they are looking to attract, offer more activities, etc. I think the price of daycare affects a lot of families and is one of their biggest expenses. Lots of parents can not work because daycare cost more than they make, so they stay home with their children.

When we went to daycare, the cost included meals, arts and crafts, snacks, education, etc.
