CPSS/413: Character-And Personality-Based Disorder
Inmate John Doe
Inmate John Doe is currently serving time for shooting and killing his neighbor’s family pet. He insists that he repeatedly asked the neighbors to remove the dog because it was very disruptive. John claims that the dog was always barking and disrupting his peace and was never cleaned after. The neighbors have had plenty of uncomfortable encounters with John, but more issues had arisen every time peace officers had to be contacted. Neighbors are in fear of John being released because of his current harassment letters he’s been sending them. He is highly vindictive and isn’t willing to work on his issues. He is upset and believes he’s being targeted and has been tried unfairly.

What is Manipulation
Manipulation is a set of behaviors whose goal is to:
Get what they want from others when the others are not willing initially to give in.
Be dishonest, get people to do or act in a way which might not have freely chosen on their own.
“Con” others to believe and present a false reality in a way the inmate wants others to believe is true.
Manipulation skills are probably the most important developmental skills any individual can possess. We all utilize manipulative skills as a consistent part of communicating with other people. As adults, we might attempt to manipulate our supervisors to approve a leave request, to give a much deserved salary increase or an easier job post. Everyone does it, now let’s understand it so that we can prevent it and reduce the effects of the manipulation game on us. Inmates have nothing to lose and everything to gain by manipulating you into anything.
4
Ways Manipulation can occur in Corrections
Argumentativeness escalated voice volume, repetitive lines of questioning or demands.
There is not a clear demarcation of right and wrong, good or bad, but rather shades of grey or degrees of goodness and badness.
Many inmates will argue or question you for the sake of arguing or questioning.
Corrections officers must understand the importance of eliminating emotionally charged reactions and leave personality out of the interaction. Arguing with adults gives teen’s further practice in manipulation and can become a constructive learning experience in the art of manipulation.

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy is thought to be effective in treating Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Therapy has been found to be useful when including family members and/or friends as well.
Medication can be used to address symptoms of disorders that often accompany Narcissistic Personality Disorder, such as Depression and Anxiety. However, there isn’t a medication approved specifically for the treatment of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Self-care techniques can be widely effective in treatment. Keep an open mind by focusing on the rewards of treatment and understanding that change may be necessary. Stick with the treatment plan to achieve all goals that were set. This means keeping therapy appointments and taking medication as prescribed, if appropriate. Get treatment for co-occurring disorders to alleviate the symptoms. Remain focused and motivated on goals and the positive effects that reaching those goals will have.
