Good evening Professor and class,
I am currently a paraprofessional for physical education at an elementary school. I have been in this profession for five plus years. I am starting another job on Monday as a correction officer (CO) for a prison. The two professions are very different but similar. In the school system I help children learn and grow into responsible citizens. In the CO position I will be helping the inmates learn how to be productive and law biding inmates within the prison. Federalism impacts both of these professions. It has impacted our school system by desegregation being at the top of the list. Federalism has impacted the correctional officer profession by everyone having an equal opportunity to work in this position.
Federalism is a term that describes the United States system of dividing power and authority, derived from the people, between the state and national governments (Fine & Levin-Waldman, 2016). Federalism is important to our people because it keeps our country safe from one branch taking over any one of the other branches.
The policy that I have chosen to write my paper about would be The Civil Rights Act (1964). The Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This act prohibits discrimination in federally funded programs and public accommodations. This policy also strengthened the enforcement of voting rights and desegregated our schools.
The Civil Rights Act has currently faced these attacks that I can list sitting here thinking about it. Race-based policing, national origin-based travel bans and faith-based discrimination. Race-based policing happens everyday. This has been going on since before I was born (I am 50). Social media has brought the severity of this to the worlds attention. I am, by all means, not labeling all officers. We have some good ones, but we have the bad ones. Every time I turn on the news or pick up my smartphone I see another incident. Since the attack of The World Trade Towers, national origin-based and faith-based discrimination has been at an all-time high. Yesterday I was watching a documentary. The Caucasian woman saw a man (American Citizen) wearing a turban. The man had two phones. She called the police and reported he was with ISIS. She immediately violated his constitutional rights along with the police. This trickled up the system on his violation of rights as soon as the police arrived. The Civil Rights Act is in place to protect us from judgmental people, such as this woman.
