Hey class,
The United States government’s obligation to its people is to uphold our Civil Rights and liberties. Civil Rights typically focus on the rights of the people. Civil rights protect the citizens from discrimination in both private and public sectors (Fine & Levin-Waldman, 2016). Civil Liberties are known as things the government cannot do, such as taking away our freedom of speech or right to religious exercise. The U.S. government has an obligation to ensure its people are treated fairly. It is the job of the elected officials that run our government to ensure they are protecting the rights listed in the constitution to safeguard our freedoms.
A real-life example of the American people’s rights being protected was when my Aunt and Uncle were hit head-on by a drunk driver on their motorcycle, resulting in both of them losing their lives. After the incident happened, the driver of the Tahoe that hit them failed the field sobriety test, blew over twice the legal limit, and after being taken to the hospital, they later found out there was THC in her blood as well. She admitted to being so intoxicated she was not even sure what road she was on. Even after all this evidence was brought forth, she still had the same rights as anyone else would. In the eyes of the law, she was still to be treated as if she was innocent until proven guilty and had the right to a trial.
Although the court proceedings were extremely difficult for both families to go through, I feel it would be unfair for someone to be put away without expressing all aspects of the crime that was comminuted. If the rolls would have been reversed, or the operator of the Tahoe would have been sober, and the incident was truly an accident, then the accused party should have the right to express that.
