While viewing the documentary, take notes on what contributed to the rise of HIV/AIDS in the African American population in order to answer the following questions:

 

1. Stigma occurs when an individual, culture, or society views another individual or group in a negative way because of some distinguishing personal trait or characteristic (such as a medical diagnosis). What are some cultural beliefs specific to African American population which cause(d) stigmatization and directly contributed to increased rates of HIV/AIDS in this population? Please list AND describe 
two.

 

2. Institutional racism occurs when some policy, practice, procedure, and/or structure that guides decisions/actions within some institution (such as businesses, professional industry, government, educational institutions, etc.) causes unfair treatment to one race while other races profit. Please list AND describe

 ways that institutional racism greatly perpetuated the spread of HIV/AIDS in the AA population.

 

3. HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through shared needle use, blood, and/or sexual bodily fluids. Please list AND describe two
 specific ways that the crack cocaine epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s directly or indirectly contributed the rise and spread of HIV/AIDS in the African American population

 

4. Please provide at least

steps that have been taken to try to reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS in the African American population in the U.S.?

 

5. What are 
two
 additional strategies would you recommend to be used to try to reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS in the African American population?

 

6. This film focused on HIV/AIDS in the African American population. No matter what your ethnicity/race, we all come from different life experiences. From your own personal perspective and life experience please describe two or three ways you were impacted by watching this film.
