1. After viewing the proposal, write a one paragraph summary of the research proposal. The summary should present the reason for the research, the participants, the data collection method, and hypothetical results. The summary does not present your opinion of the study.
The research proposal is on the Lives of Military Children. The research is to shed light on mental and physical effects that children experience when military parents are deployed, causing them to live separately from at least one parent, or constant relocation of the whole family. Some of these effects are intense child attachment, PTSD, anxiety, social isolation and more. This data is collected from the children of active military parents through a questionnaire. The hypothetical results indicate that more relocation will result in increased mental and physical effects on the military children.
2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal. You must specifically discuss the strengths and weaknesses for each of the following proposal sections:
Title:
The Lives of Military Children
Does the title give a clear and concise description of the scope and nature (quantitative, qualitative, mixed) of the research? Yes, the title is The Lives of Military Children and is a clear and concise description. The research is shown to be qualitative.
Is it too long or too short? The title is of a perfect length.
Does the title clearly specify the variables or issues under study, the type of research (descriptive, correlational, experimental, survey, or action research), and the target population? The title specifies the variables under the study such as the children, which also the target population, from a military household. It can be inferred that type of research could be descriptive, survey, or correlational, but not explicitly.
Introduction/Background:
Does the introduction provide enough information about:
(1) why the research is important.
The research is indicated as being important because it is common for a military household to not be aware of the effects their position puts on their children’s mental and physical well being.
(2) how this research will add to the body of knowledge in this area?
The research is stated to help to shed light on the effects a military household will have on the children and start the conversation of how to cope with it. It is also stated in the presentation “often people say that children are too young to remember specific memories and they might be right, but what they feel will always be remembered.”
Support your answer with the argument and a brief quotation from the proposal.
Research Question/Problem:
Is each research problem/question clearly stated? If not, how could it be more clearly stated? Yes, each research problem/question is clearly stated.
Is the purpose of the study clearly stated? Yes, the purpose of the study is clearly stated.
Does the purpose statement express what the study intends to accomplish? Yes, the purpose statement expresses what the study intends to accomplish.
Literature Review:
Based on your reading of the literature review, do you think the researcher has a good grasp of current (published within the past 5 years) research regarding the issue? Why or why not?The presentation did not include the writing of the literature review. However, it was discussed in the presentation. Based on that information, I believe the researcher had a good grasp of the current research regarding the mental and physical effects on military children.
Are the works presented relevant to the research question?
The works presented were all relevant to the research question.
Hypotheses:
How many hypotheses are being stated? There is one hypothesis mentioned in the research. This is stated as more relocations/deployment will have increased effects on children’s emotional, physical, and mental well being.
How clearly each one is stated?
The hypothesis was clearly mentioned
Do they match the research purpose?
Yes, the hypothesis matched the research purpose.
Are the hypotheses a prediction of the expected outcome of the study?
Methods:
What is the research method and design? The research indicates that she uses data findings from similar research and questionnaire from children of active military
Is it appropriate for achieving the objectives and types of data to be collected and analyzed? The researcher’s way of method and research method is appropriate.
Participants:
Does the proposal describe who the population is and how to recruit the participants? The proposal shows that children are contacted through a system that shows active military personnel and their family. However, there is no indication of a recruitment system for more participants.
Data Collection Instrumentation and Techniques:
Does it include the specific technique, its procedure, and the instruments for collecting data? This presentation shows that collecting data will be from a questionnaire survey.
Is it consistent with the research method/design? This is consistent with the research method and design.
What type of statistical analysis is suggested? Is it appropriate with the obtained data? There is no statistical analysis suggested for this research.
Also, are procedures to follow for conducting the study described effectively? Are the procedures consistent with the research objectives and method/design? There are no procedures to follow for conducting the study that are consistent with the research method/design.
3. List any potential ethical considerations you foresee. Every researcher developing a proposal for research must demonstrate how the rights of the participants will be upheld. Specifically, state:
How were the participants fully informed about the nature of the research? This was not discussed in the proposal presentation.
How was the autonomy/confidentiality of the participants guaranteed? The presentation did not address confidentiality of participants. This could cause legal implications for the researchers.
How were the participants protected from harm? How was ethical permission granted for the study? This was not discussed in the proposal presentation. This could cause legal implications for the researcher. This could also endanger participants’ identity and well being.
4. Describe the quality of sources provided in the proposal. Specifically comment on:
Are all the citations that appear in the proposal body presented in the References list? Explain the importance of citing all references. Citations and Reference list were not included in the presentation. However, the researcher discussed her citations when speaking of the data regarding the mental and physical effects on military children.
How recent are the sources and are they appropriate for the topic investigated? Sources are fairly recent and appropriate for the topic investigated.
Explain the author’s familiarity with the body of knowledge that is investigated? I believe the author’s familiarity with the knowledge investigated is solid as she referencing numerous statistics and sources to strengthen her research. She even discusses her direct experience on the knowledge due to her niece, who has a military parent and suffers from anxiety.
How was the application of the source comprehensive (depth and breadth)? The author did a good job in showing the application and source comprehension in her presentation.
5. List any other suggestions/accolade you have for the researcher or the proposal. Using at least one full paragraph, you must address at least one of the following and specifically explain why this is a suggestion for improvement or specifically explain why you feel that this component of the proposal was done well.
The introduction and background to the study
The research questions/hypotheses
The literature review/theory
The data collection method: I would suggest to include more information on the data and collection method. As of now, it is only known that military children take a survey. It should also be indicated if a legal/guardian’s permission or consent form is required for a child to participate in the study/fill out the survey. I would also suggest indicating the age range of the military children and when they are taking this survey. This is important to address confidentiality concerns and to determine how long into their lives military children have mental or physical effects.
The data analysis method
The hypothetical data presentation/findings
The discussion of future research based on the results of this study
