Nursing Informatics
Knowledge holds a crucial position in the nursing profession. The branch of nursing that incorporates technology and computers into everyday nursing practice is known as nursing informatics. Lee (2014) has described informatics as the nursing specialty that combines nursing sciences with computers and information to enhance communication and management of knowledge, information, and data. Its advancement has been significantly influenced by technological advances in recent years, the need to make work easier and reduce paperwork in healthcare. Integrating evidence-based care with informatics could potentially improve practice and the standard of care. Darvish et al. (2014) state that informatics focuses on healthcare promotion by enhancing communication, decision support, and medical diagnosis. It has improved efficiency in managing staff, patients, and equipment increased the direct care time provided to patients, enhanced research, and provided access to all data and evidence.
Many nurses who venture into the field of nursing informatics do so without necessarily requiring further education. Often they acquire adequate computer skills while working in a hospital or on-the-job training. However, an individual can study to be an informatics nurse by enrolling in school and obtaining a bachelor’s degree, advanced degree, or a master’s certificate. Education involves informatics skills, computer skills, and informatics knowledge. Once an individual is done with education, s/he has to be certified. Two certifications are available, one from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which provides an examination specific to nursing informatics (McGonigle & Mastrain, 2018). The second certification is from the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), which examines all healthcare professionals interested in informatics. Due to the vitality of technology in modern healthcare, healthcare providers need to be conversant with informatics and computer systems.

Nursing informatics is a nursing specialty that involves integrating information and communication technology in nursing practice. Due to nursing informatics, technology has been adopted in research, education, administration, and nursing practice to expand nursing knowledge (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). Nurse informacists are tasked with the duty to implement technological solutions, which have revolutionized healthcare through improved patient care. Technology has changed the provision of care through the ease of information sharing and patient management. Nursing informatics has improved clinical encounters by creating an automated healthcare environment that promotes care coordination and improves patient outcomes.
The role of nursing informatics in nursing is to improve nursing practice by providing new workflows and solutions to clinical problems. Competent nurses with skills in informatics are able to make better clinical decisions as there is quick access to patient health information. For example, the use of electronic health records (EHRs) allows nurses to access and share patient information in real-time improving workflows, and minimizing potential errors (Aguirre et al., 2019). Nurse informatics specialists manage and communicate information in nursing practice to improve patient care.
Nursing informatics specialists need at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing or another relevant field, such as healthcare informatics or health information technology (Farzandipour et al., 2021). They also need to be licensed by passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) exam. A nurse informatics specialist must obtain an RN license and also pass the Informatics Nurse Certification Examination set by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which examines nurses’ knowledge in informatics. A registered nurse who meets the eligibility criteria should apply for the ANCC nursing informatics board certification examination. The criteria is holding an active RN license in the U.S. or an equivalent qualification in other countries, 2 years of practice as an RN, completing 30 hours of nursing informatics education within the last 3 years, and at least 2000 practice hours in nursing informatics, or at least 1000 practice hours in nursing informatics and completion of at least 12 semester hours of a graduate-level nursing informatics program, or completion of a nursing informatics graduate program.
