My first example from the history of public health is based on the first statement of the essentials of public health that states, “Assess and monitor population health status, factors that influence health, and community needs and assets.”
Before the eighteenth century, there were outbreaks of deadly diseases like diphtheria, plaque, chorea, smallpox, etc, and the cause of the spread of such diseases was unknown (Health status of the community). In the eighteenth century, it was evident that isolation and quarantine help contain the disease (factors that influence health) and efforts were made by several American port cities by adopting rules of trade quarantine and establishing voluntary hospitals (community needs and assets).
Over the centuries, science developed and the cause of diseases spreading became clearer. Taking the population into account, cleaning of the streets, community water, and sanitization have been adopted as new rules for the benefit of the community and for the reduction of disease spread. In recent events of the year 2019, Covid 19 (a virus) outbreak caused many deaths. The community need was assessed, and quarantine was recommended to contain the disease utilizing the first statement of EPHS.
My second example from the history of public health is based on the second statement on the essentials of public health that states, “Investigate, diagnose, and address health problems and hazards affecting the population.”
Taking covid 19 into account again, there were reports of pneumonia due to unknown etiology in China causing the closedown of Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market on 1, January 2020 leading to its disinfection and sanitization. Due to this event, the first investigation was conducted in China by the Municipal Health Commission, which resulted in the discovery of the new virus, Covid 19.
Viral and antibody tests were made to diagnose patients with Covid 19 and the results showed millions of people affected, showing symptoms and also leading them to their deaths.
CDC, which is an organization whose goal is to protect public health through the control and prevention of diseases came with new guidelines for the safety of the population by asking people affected with the virus to quarantine and advice people eligible for the vaccination to protect themselves by getting a vaccination. It also advised the population to get booster doses for new variants to further protect the population.
The EPHS guidelines are an organized framework that helps to think about the benefit of public health in an orderly manner.

Hi, I am Randolph and chose the following topics for my discussion.
Diagnose and investigate health problems and hazards in the community: Diagnose and Investigate exercises help to identify health problems and hazards in a community which include policies and practices and community-level determinants of health. For example: 1). Environmental exposure:To prevent lead poisoning by ensuring that required standards of water services are met. 2). Bioterrorism (Inhalational anthrax 2001): National investigation initiated in the U. S to identify additional cases and determine possible exposure to Bacillus anthracis.
Inform, educate, and empower people about health: Programs in health assist people and communities to upgrade their mental, physical, emotional and social health by living healthier lives and increase the understanding of their well-being. Health education strategies includes: Target group or population participation, needs assessment in identifying community priorities, resources and capacity. For example: Seminars, workshops, courses and gurantee access to cultural and language appropriate approaches to community health including efforts that address health inequalities.
