Science essay about climate change
Science Criterion D Task
Why don’t some people believe in climate change? Why is it so hard to change people’s minds?
While the scientific community is in near 100% agreement on the causes and
consequences of climate change, there are still some people who believe that
climate change is Pseudoscience. They suggest that humans are not the cause of
climate change, or that it is simply not happening at all.
For your essay you will investigate some of these Pseudoscience ideas and use
your understanding of the science to write a counter argument to some of the
suggestions.
Below is a suggested outline for you to follow. These are not paragraph
suggestions, each section may have more than one paragraph, this is just a
general idea of things to include.
1 .Outline the problem
Some people suggest that climate change is a “hoax”. Outline some of their arguments
and briefly explain why they believe climate change is not occurring or a problem.
2. Suggest a solution to the problem
For the climate change denier arguments you outlined as your problem, write a
response, with lots of data and sourced evidence to counter their points. You can even
include graphs and diagrams here, but you must analyse and explain what they show
for them to be relevant in your essay. Make sure to explain the science behind climate
change (greenhouse gases, greenhouse effect).
3. Conclusion
For this section, evaluate the impact that scientists are having on reducing climate
change with an interacting factor. Could you also suggest a way of changing the minds
of climate change deniers? How can we make sure that this misinformation isn’t spread
even more?
This work will be submitted through the Google classroom and also Turnitin.com.
NOTE: We have been teaching you for a whole school year now, we know your writing
style. Those who we think have not completed this work themselves, will be expected to
have a more detailed conversation with their teacher to provide evidence that the work
is authentic. Plus, we really like reading what you actually write, and those are the
essays that score the best!
Some other things to remember.
1. All work must be cited using MLA. Use 5 different sources and at least 3 different
types
2. Use scientific vocabulary in a clear, concise and accurate manner
3. Do not copy and paste, it will show up on turnitin
4. Do not paraphrase. Read the information you are interested in including in your
essay, write down the main points in your notebook. Then, rewrite the information
in your own words, remembering to still include the in-text citation! If you didn’t
discover the idea yourself, you have to cite the person who did.
