This activity addresses module outcomes 1, 2, and 3. Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
· Module Outcome 1: Discuss the future of terrorism and its effects on American civil liberties. (CO1)
· Module Outcome 2: Describe the tactics used to address new terrorism challenges. (CO2)
· Module Outcome 3: Explain the use of surveillance technology in preventing terrorism in the United States. (CO1, 3)
In the “New Terrorism” technologies are used for the execution of terrorist strikes, as well as by governments to track and mitigate terrorist threats. Given the ever-changing nature of communication technologies and corporate and international cooperation to counter terrorist activities, terrorism continues to threaten security. However, due to the ability to anonymously monitor online traffic, governments have taken liberties that raise ethical considerations when considering civil liberties traditionally held within democratic states.
Respond to the following:
· Examine new technologies used to fight terrorism, and discuss how they might be regulated? In your view, can they be regulated; should they be regulated? Support your reasoning with information from the readings and external sources.
· In your considered opinion, what government-based counterterrorism efforts are best suited to prevent future terrorist events in the world (policy-driven, military, law enforcement, communications companies partnerships, intelligence, etc.)? Support your reasoning with information from the readings and external sources.
Post your primary response by Thursday, 11:59 pm EST. Each primary discussion needs to be at least 200 words in length with citations and references to support your position. Read any postings already provided by your instructor or fellow students. Read and respond to the conclusions drawn by at least two of your classmates by Sunday, 11:59 pm EST. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module.
Consult the
Discussion Posting Guide
for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click “Reply.” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.” This is a “post first” discussion forum. You must submit your initial post before you can view other students’ posts.
To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.
