Class,
When it comes to Social work I’m pretty open to any area of it. However, to be more specific I’m interested more in helping children, because Children don’t ask to be put in their circumstances. Four behaviors I found to be useful when developing a professional identity is, “Assess your skills, Package your skills, Be the best you can, and Develop communication skills” Lo, Mika. (2017). Some development barriers I believe I will have is learning how to effectively communicate when things get tough or wondering if I’m being effective in my communication, as well as perfecting my skills as well as being able to change them up depending on the client. The Christian worldview can have good and influence on my professional identity, I will make sure that it never hinders my clients because of my believes but also sheds a positive light by giving support and helping others the way God intended us to be.

When I first switched to a social work program, I had the intention of working with at-risk youth. However, after working with the disabled my heart pulled me towards working with that population instead. As a social worker, there are many behaviors that need to be incorporated into one’s professional identity. In order to develop my identity more, I will need to incorporate ethical behavior, understanding diversity, and differences, critical thinking, and advocating for social justice. Though all of these behaviors are items that I try to maintain, they do need to be worked on and improved. For example, diversity and differences, which is acknowledging the interaction between culture and personal identity (Dale & Smith, 2013). In today’s society, there have been many changes to individual culture and identities, which I support but need to learn more about before approaching certain topics. As for the Christian worldview, I am not particularly religious but from my understanding of the Christian faith, there are several factors that could influence my professional identity. The main factor is the faith in a higher power that helps to guide the moral compass of those who believe. Christians believe in treating others with the same respect and dignity as they would wish to be shown in return.
