Nightingale

Biographical Background and Experience
Florence Nightingale lived between 1820 to 1910.
His birth took place Italy on May 12, 1820
Her parents were France and Shore Nightingale
She is recognized a nurse, social reformer, and statistician within British
She is considered to be the basis of the modern nursing.
The experience in Crimean war led to her proposal and support for sanitation practices (History.com, 2020).

Florence Nightingale lived between 1820 to 1910. She was born on May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy to France Nightingale and William Shore Nightingale. She was a British nurse, social reformer, and statistician who is best known as the founder of modern nursing. Her experience as a nurse, especially during the Crimean war, was the foundation in her view about sanitation. During this time, the British Empire was at war against the Russian Empire to control the Ottoman Empire. Many soldiers were sent to the Black Sea where the supplies diminished. About 18,000 soldiers had been admitted into the military hospital.

Nightingale realized the pathetic condition of the hospital and ensured that there was an improvement in the sanitary condition of the facility. She achieved this by creating several patient services that improved the quality of the hospital stay. She established laundry and ensured a special diet for patients, classroom, and a library to stimulate patients’ intellect.

The Personal beliefs of the person
She discovered a great comfort in her religious beliefs.
She experienced a call from God when she was 16-years old
The calling was to help in the reduction of human suffering.
Nursing as an appropriate route of reducing human suffering.
She wanted to use nursing to serve both God and humankind.
Believed in the role of the environment in improving patient recovery.
The interventions involving environment improvement such as availability of light promotes patients’ recover (History.com, 2020).

Florence discovered a great comfort in her religious beliefs. At the age of 16 years, she experience a call from God. She considered her calling as reducing human suffering. She considered nursing as the suitable route of achieving this goal. She considered nursing as the best approach of serving both God and humankind. As a nurse, she discovered the role of the environment in improving nursing process. According to her, the existence of fresh air, pure water, effective drainage, cleanliness and sanitation, and light or direct sunlight promotes patients’ recovery.

How Nightingale Overcame or Confronted any Adversities
Nightingale considered diet, dirt, and drains as issues
She brought some foods from England and cleaning up the kitchens
She instructed other nurses to help in cleaning the hospital wards.

Therefore, Nightingale brought about the role of the sanitary and hygienic practices within the facility. It was evident that patients suffered due to lack of some resources such as bandages. She assisted in ensuring that these resources were available. This is an indication of empathy practice that helped in improving the condition of the patients. At the time, no female nurses was stationed at the hospital in Crimea. The poor reputation of the past female nurses had led to war office to avoid hiring them. After Nightingale’s work, young women got inspired to be like her.
