Think about your perspective and experience with diverse populations in society. Consider the effect that your race, sexual orientation, economic and social status, and physical ability have on your life and the lives of others. In this week’s Application Assignment, choose one of the four assignment choices to submit.

To prepare for this Application:

  • Review Chapter 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 in the course text, focusing on the four perspectives with respect to a diverse society.
  • Focus on the definitions and examples of individual, cultural, institutional racism, sexism, classism, and ableism.
  • Think specifically about examples of individual, cultural, and institutional racism, sexism, classism and ableism that you have witnessed or heard about in your own life.
  • Consider how racism, sexism, classism, and ableism has impacted different groups, past and present.
  • Reflect on efforts to combat racism, sexism, classism, and ableism historically and in contemporary times.

To complete this Assignment, you will write a 1- to 2-page paper that addresses one of the following:

  • Choose either the topic of racism, sexism, classism, or ableism as the subject for your assignment. Create a 1- to 2-page paper following the guidelines below for your chosen topic. Be sure to include the “ism” you are responding to in your title.

Review Chapter 8 in the course text, focusing on the definitions and examples of individual, cultural, institutional racism.Think about what you were taught about people of different races. Define and provide an example for each of the following: individual racism, cultural racism, and institutional racism. You may select examples from the book or from your own life experience.Explain the factors that contribute to racism at each of the three levels.Compare and contrast the impact racism has and/or has had on African Americans and either Mexican Americans or Native Americans.Describe at least one effort to combat racism, in the past or present, and illustrate its impact.Consider how racism has impacted different racial groups, past and present.Reflect on efforts to combat racism, historically and in contemporary times.
Review Chapter 10 of the course text, focusing on individual, cultural, and institutional sexism.Review Chapter 11 in the course text, focusing on individual, cultural, and institutional heterosexism.Think about examples of sexism and heterosexism that you have experienced personally or have heard or read about.Compare the individual, cultural, and institutional levels of sexism OR heterosexism and explain their impact on the specific group(s) affected. Then describe any effort you know of that has been made to combat the effects of sexism or heterosexism. Consider the effect that sexism and heterosexism have on the people that experience it.Review Chapter 10 of the course text, focusing on individual, cultural, and institutional sexism. Compare the individual, cultural, and institutional levels of sexism OR heterosexism and explain their impact on the specific group(s) affected. Then describe any effort you know of that has been made to combat the effects of sexism or heterosexism.Discuss the effect that sexism and heterosexism have on the people that experience it.Consider the similarities and differences between the “isms” and their effect on their “targets.”
Poverty and Classism Review Chapter 9, focusing on the causes and consequences of poverty at the individual, cultural, and institutional levels.To what class do you think you belong? How does your class affect your life in terms of opportunities and treatment? Think about how you personally, and people in general, determine someone’s class.How are people’s responses to others influenced by the others’ classes?Consider incidents you have experienced at home, in your neighborhood, at school, and/or in your workplace that reflect the presence of classism and/or poverty.Reflect on historical and/or current efforts to combat classism and/or poverty. Explain at least two major causes of poverty. Use specific examples to illustrate your points.Explain at least two consequences of poverty that affect individuals and the society. And how have they been treated?Review Chapter 12, focusing on the history of treatment of people with disabilities and the more recent inclusion of them as a minority group.Review Chapter 12, this time focusing on the presence of ableism at individual and institutional levels as well as the consequences of ableism. Analyze the existence of ableism at individual and institutional levels and note some of the consequences of such ableism. Be sure to provide specific examples to illustrate your points.Consider the advantages and disadvantages of this inclusion as it relates to the oppression of people with disabilities.Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of persons with disabilities being classified as a minority group needing civil rights protection.
