Health Information Exchange (HIE) logically follows our examination of the electronic health records and data standards during Week Two. For this discussion, please address the following questions in numbered format.
· Discuss why HIE is so important in medicine and why it must occur at local, state and national levels. Provide examples of medical information that should be shared at these three levels.
· Discuss the implications of information sharing on efficiency, patient safety, care coordination, cost reduction and improved quality.
· Finally, discuss how HIE is necessary for all stages of meaningful use.
