Topic 8 DQ 2
Evidence based change projects are initiated in an attempt to be proactive in guiding health care decisions and improving the quality of health care. This new knowledge can have a significantly positive impact on patient care if successful. For this reason, in order to implement evidence-based practice it is important for nurse to comprehend and be able to interpret research. This is where statistical significance and clinical significance comes in. Statistical significance is established by an analysis conducted by researchers. Statistically significant difference means an association or difference exists between the variables that weren’t caused solely by normal variation or chance (Heavey, 2015). This is ruled by the p-value and confidence intervals and is when we find a difference where p <0.05 (Leyva de los Rios, 2017). This is significant to my research for many of my articles were based on small sample size and this can affect the ability to find an accurate statistical significant difference.
A clinically significant difference means the researchers found a statistically significant difference that experts in the field believe is substantial enough to be clinically important and thus should direct the course of patient care (Leyva de los Rios, 2017). Statically significance must be established before clinical significant can be determined. Often times a statically significant difference will also be clinically significant, but a statically significant difference is not always deemed clinically significant. Clinical significance is the practical importance of the treatment effect, whether it has a real, palpable, noticeable effect on daily life (Leyva de los Rios). This can be established by experts in the field this may be the same researchers, who decide if a statistically significant difference is clinically important. Additionally, results can be statistically significant and clinically important, not statistically significant, but clinically important and statistically significant but not clinically important.
Breastfeeding provides unmatched health benefits for babies and mothers. It is the clinical gold standard for infant feeding and nutrition, with breast milk uniquely tailored to meet the health needs of a growing baby. Medical professional organizations have long been researching the importance of breast milk and it high yet versatile characteristics to provide various benefits to both infants and mothers. These are both statistically and clinically important. All the research which has been conducted for years can be used to back up my project.
Not all EBP projects result in statistically significant results. Define clinical significance, and explain the difference between clinical and statistical significance. How can you use clinical significance to support positive outcomes in your project?
Using 200-300 words APA format with at least two references. Sources must be published within the last 5 years. There should be a mix between research and your reflections. Add critical thinking in the posts along with research. Apply the material in a substantial way
